The Do’s and Don’ts of Renting a Dumpster
You might think that renting a dumpster would be a fairly uncomplicated process, but there are a few things you should keep in mind prior to renting, and in the period afterward. Here are some of the do’s and don’ts which you should be familiar with when you are considering renting a roll-off dumpster for some kind of cleanout project at your residence, or at your place of business.
Do call ahead to secure a dumpster
It’s always best to give some advance notice to your dumpster rental company, and this should be at least a week in advance of the time you actually intend to use it. The reason for this is that a one-week notification should give your dumpster company time to reserve the type of dumpster you’re looking for. If you were to call them the day before or the day that you actually intend to use the dumpster, it’s very likely that they might not have the size you want on hand. In fact, they may not have any available at all. To be sure of getting the type of dumpster you want on the day that you want it, you’re best off to call at least a week in advance and make a reservation.
Do some preparation work
Have a good idea about what you intend to discard into the dumpster, and also it would be good to have some idea of the volume of waste which you intend to discard. This will help the rental company to provide you with the appropriate size dumpster for your needs, so you can be sure to accommodate all the material you intend to throw away. If you don’t do this kind of planning beforehand, you will not have any idea of the type of container you want or need. This can result in you reserving the wrong size container, and if you guess wrong on the high side, you will be paying for a larger container than you actually need. Do abide by company rules
Make sure you don’t throw away prohibited items in the dumpster, because these cannot only damage the dumpster but they can also be harmful to the environment. Your dumpster company will provide you with a list of prohibited items, e.g. old batteries, paint cans, computers, that should not be tossed into the dumpster. In addition to the harm you might cause, you may also be fined for violating company policies and discarding unacceptable materials.
Don’t overload the dumpster
Your dumpster can be safely secured when it’s being hauled away from your house, as long as you don’t overload it, and have material sticking out the sides and out the top. If you do overload the dumpster, that may cause it to exceed a weight limit, and that will probably result in you being fined. It’s also possible that discarded material can fall into the street, and that can create a littering violation that someone will have to pay for.
Don’t assume the largest companies are the best
Sometimes, the largest companies in the business don’t really provide the best value for your money. In situations like this, you should contact other people who may have used this dumpster service, or better yet, read online reviews of customers who have used the service before. It may turn out that your best value is with a smaller company that offers advantageous rates as well as superior customer service.
